The Hammer Rite was created by Edred Thorsson ( he would be somewhat comparable to Gerald Gardner, but in Heathen circles) as a protection rite for magickal or ritual workings. I found an acceptable write up of it, but you'll have to excuse the spelling.
With thanks to Unknown ( other than Edred Thorsson).
Hamarssetning
Elements of the Hammer rite...
Hamarsetning: Similar to the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram, the Hammer Rite is the primary and most basic ritual of protectionin Asatru'.
The Hammer Rite, like most rituals of protection, is primaraly used to create a sacred space. Sacred space or the traditional sacred circle of other magickal traditions are known in Asatru' as Ve' (Sacred Enclosure) or Galdrahol (Hall of Incantation).
Like other protection circles, the Hammer Rite contains quarters or quadrents that relate and/or are governed by the elements of earth that are essential to ritual magick. The positions of the elemental quadrents are placed as to their relevence to the Nordic world tree The Yggdrassil. As described in the Voluspa', the Yggdrassil's roots reach all nine worlds (nine worlds I can count, nine roots of the tree-the wonderful ash). Of the nine worlds six of them serve as elemental quarters, two of the remaining three are to be accessed by means of erecting a Ve', the final world is known as Midgard. It is the earth plane on which we exist. The position of midgard is in the center of Yggdrassil. As opposed to other traditions are four in number (Earth, Air, Fire, Water), the Hammer Rite has an additional two quarters; above (intellect, and below (emotion). These complete six of the nine worlds.
The Ritual
The ritual is to be started in the North. The hammer sign is to be erected either mentaly, or with a Athame or gandhr(wand). The hammer is to be drawn in this fashion:
From top to bottom, and left to right,
The force for emitting the full force of the hammer should be drawn from the solar plexus for maximum effect.
Draw the hammer in either red or blue flame. If this is done correctly it should become very visual.
The wording of the hammer rite can be done in English, or Old Norse, or any language you feel comfortable in. The rite may be adapted by means of changing the wording saying such as: Spirits and Powers to the North instead of Hammer in the North.
The following example is taken from Edred Thorsson'd Futhark. Use it as a model and consult other sources for other examples of application.
Hamarr i Nordhi helga ve' thetta ok hald vordh!
Hammer in the North hallow and hold this holy stead!
Hammarr i Austri helga ve' thetta ok hald vordh!
Hammer in the East hallow and hold this holy stead!
Hammarr i Sudri helga ve' thetta ok hald vordh!
Hammer in the South hallow and hold this holy stead!
Hammarr i Vestri helga ve' thetta ok hald vordh!
Hammer in the West hallow and hold this holy stead!
Hammarr helga ve' thetta ok hald vordh!
Hammer hallow and hold this holy stead!
Hammarr undir mer helga ve' thetta ok hald vordh!
Hammer under me hallow and hold this holy stead!
Hammarr yfir mer helga ve' thetta ok hald vordh!
Hammer above me hallow and hold this holy stead!
Now center all the hammers to your personal center and say:
Um mik ok i mer Asgardhr ok Midgardhr!
Around me and in me Asgard and Midgard!!!
